Dogs kill cat that survived snake bite and broken jaw.21.12.2015
ABBEY the black cat had been part of Theresa Lewis' family for her whole life - a whole 16 years.
But on Monday Abbey was brutally killed by two roaming dogs and Theresa said she was "heartbroken".
"My husband rang me at work and said the council had come to the yard and said 'do you have a cat, do you have a black cat?' and they said two dogs attacked our cat," the Rockhampton woman said.
"Abbey was in the front yard, we let them (the cats) out in the morning when I go to work, and we lock them up at night."
While the attack was hard to talk about, Theresa said the dogs broke both of Abbey's back legs, and mauled her body.
"They didn't eat her, they just killed her," Theresa said.
"We are just heartbroken - in the 10 years we have lived here there have been a lot of stray dogs, but they have never bothered the cats before.
"She died a horrible death." Abbey had survived a brown snake bite and a broken jaw, and the tiny cat who weighed less than three kilograms was very much loved. "I don't blame the dogs, I don't, with any animal you have to be a responsible owner," Theresa said. "We are responsible - we let our cats out at day time not at night because they would do their hunting at night." While the council worker allegedly told Theresa's husband that the owners of the dogs would receive a hefty fine, she said it would not bring her pet back. "It has just broken my heart, she has been part of my family for 16 years and now she is not there any more."
