CATS IN FOR SIBLING REVELRY
Brother-sister duo Vishal and Sunaina come to rescue of kitten that had been mauled by a dog
A brother-sister duo in Cambridge Layout refused to give up on a stray female kitten who had been badly mauled by a stray dog. The injury was so bad that the vets had to resurrect a badly fractured right hind leg using a small steel rod for support. But she survived, thanks to the siblings - Sunaina Malani, 32, an HR Professional, and her brother Vishal Malani, 28, a marketing professional - who have emerged as angels for destitute or orphaned felines or even those in distress.
When everyone else had left the little mauled kitten to its own fate, the Malani siblings refused to give up, using social media to raise the money for the operation which cost `10,000. They were able to raise `7,000, and the rest of the money was put in by them.
The kitten recovered after the operation conducted by Dr Ramesh of Cessna vet clinic in Domlur. "She suffered two fractures in her femur bone and we had to put a steel rod and rectify the problem," Dr Ramesh said. She was taken under foster care by one of the volunteers and was subsequently adopted by a British lady.
Sunaina and Vishal got to know about the kitten's injuries only because they had earlier helped an abandoned male kitten find a feline family, which comprised of the mother and five kittens including the survivor kitten adopted by the British lady.
Says Sunaina: "A few weeks ago, I received a call from a neighbour informing me that there was an abandoned male kitten in her utility area. The mother cat had littered and taken away the rest of the kittens, leaving this one behind. Since the kitten was very tiny, she said she did not know how to handle him and asked for my help. I went there and took the kitten and went about the locality looking for his mother.
We could not keep him in my house since we already have a cat. But in one of our neighbouring houses, we saw there was a mother cat that had given birth to a litter of five kittens. We got one of those kittens home to check if this abandoned one belonged to the same family, but it did not."
Despite that, the siblings decided to leave the abandoned male kitten with the mother cat and her five kittens to see whether the mother would accept another's kitten. She did! The male kitten was readily accepted by the feline family. "But one day, we learnt that one of the female kittens among the litter was attacked by a stray dog and was badly injured. The bone of the right hind leg was completely crushed. So we took her to a clinic and got her operated. The doctors were shocked at her endurance level. In spite of the pain she did not faint and survived the surgery with grit," says Vishal.
With the dog-mauled kitten already adopted, the siblings are now looking for people to adopt each of the five remaining kittens. Their main worry is that if they do not find safe and secure homes for the kittens, they could be attacked like the little female kitten who has to live with a steel rod inserted in its femur bone after the ferocious canine attack.
